Tesla takes back its ambitious statements for autopilot
Tesla has quietly started to remove blog posts from its website describing the company’s promises regarding autonomous driving technology. In particular, the absence of an article published in 2016 claiming that all new Tesla models would have autonomous driving with a software update has attracted attention.
The deletion of the blog post titled “All Tesla Vehicles Now Fully Autonomous Driving Equipped” from the website was particularly curious. Tesla vehicles need to receive various hardware upgrades to meet the company’s autonomous driving goals.
No Tesla ever built to date can drive itself without a driver. Tesla’s current vehicle software is branded Full Self-Driving (FSD) to clarify the need for human oversight.
Customers who paid additional fees for FSD capabilities years ago have had to spend more money on hardware improvements as Tesla’s technology has advanced. Some owners have filed lawsuits claiming false advertising due to unfulfilled autonomous driving promises.
By scrubbing blog posts dating back to 2016, Tesla has also removed ambitious autonomous driving goals for its cars. The company now emphasizes that self-driving depends on various hardware and software requirements.
